What is the European Capital of Democracy?

The European Capital of Democracy (ECoD) is an EU project whose main goal is to promote citizen participation and debate on democracy in Europe. Having been selected by a European citizen jury made up of 2,500 people, Barcelona was chosen as the first European Capital of Democracy. This autumn will see the launch of a one-year activities programme in various parts of the city and Barcelona metropolitan region aimed at opening and promoting spaces for reflection and debate around the main challenges facing democracy at local, European and global levels. Using several participation formats, the programme seeks to promote citizen debate and deliberative democracy, explore participatory democracy models, and foster the exchange of democratic innovation experiences and initiatives intended to encourage and empower citizens and also help to build collaboration and dialogue spaces that guarantee inclusion and deal with the importance of equality and rights in democracies.
