A conference is a collection of meetings arranged in a programme, with a number of people invited as speakers, and other information fields typical of large congresses or social events (registration, list of organisations that support or sponsor the event, etc.).
Examples: A conference can be a relevant event for an organization and its members, or take place as part of a participatory process or follow a consultation.
Introduction
MUNSA, the Model United Nations (MUN) organized by UNSA Barcelona, will hold its fifth edition from September 12 to 15, 2024.
Details
After hosting 159 participants from more than 31 different countries last year, this year the organizing team is committed to consolidating the event's internationalization, increasing its public recognition within the Catalan university community, and maintaining and enhancing academic quality.
Model United Nations (MUNs) are simulations organized by and for university students in which participants become delegates of a country in a specific committee, usually within the United Nations, although other supranational organizations are also simulated. During the conference, participants must debate topics of international interest, defend the position of the country they represent, and negotiate to try to reach agreements and solutions to the issues or conflicts presented.
The fifth edition of MUNSA will be held at the Ciutadella Campus of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and will last for four days. The conference is expected to gather over 160 delegates from universities in Catalonia, Spain, and beyond. Six committees on diverse topics will simulate debates about present and future challenges, aiming to find solutions and reach consensus to address global issues and conflicts.
This year, two new committees will debut: the Group of Twenty (G20) and the General Assembly's Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL). The former focuses on digital transition and sustainable development in gender and culture, while the latter will tackle compensations for communities affected by nuclear weapons testing and the postcolonial political conflict in French Polynesia.
The European Union will once again play a prominent role in this edition, which will host a European Council (EUCO) for the third time. Here, delegates will negotiate to try to reach consensus on migrant integration and the impact of asylum policies. Simultaneously, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will address internal displacement in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Thanks to last year's success, MUNSA will once again include a fiction committee, where participants can unleash their creativity and imagination to resolve conflicts in an alternate reality. This year, a futuristic scenario is proposed, where discussions will revolve around a hypothetical new balance of power in the Arab League. Finally, a United Nations Security Council simulation will once again test delegates' diplomatic skills as they strive to find solutions to ensure stability in the Kashmir region.
